Private investment tracking · Mac & Windows

The portfolio tracker that reads your broker statements.

Drop in the statements your brokers already send you — spreadsheets, web exports, even PDFs. Folio checks every number against the statement's own totals and turns years of scattered files into one live picture: what you own, what it earns, how you're really doing.

No account · no bank linking · no subscription — your data never leaves your computer

Most trackers make you choose: hand your broker login to someone else's cloud, or type every trade yourself. Folio refuses both.

№ 01

Drop in what you already have

No manual entry, no CSV templates, no linking your bank login to a stranger's server. Folio works from the files your broker already gives you.

Step 1

Drop the file — or watch a folder

Statements, activity exports, annual reports: CSV, Excel, HTML, PDF, Flex XML. Point Folio at your downloads folder and new statements import themselves.

Step 2

Every number is verified

Folio replays what it read and compares it with the totals printed on the statement itself — cash balances, positions, dividends. Mismatches stop the import, in plain language.

Step 3

Your whole history, alive

Duplicates are recognised automatically, so re-importing is always safe. Years of files become one ledger — and every chart and number is derived from it.

Interactive Brokers is read natively, offline and free. For other brokers Folio uses AI with your own key — and once it has learned a format (with your one-time confirmation), files in that format import instantly, offline and free, forever.

№ 02

Numbers that prove themselves

Most trackers trust whatever lands in the database. Folio doesn't — not even its own parsing.

Reconciled against the broker's own totals

Every statement prints its own summary — ending cash, open positions, dividend totals. Folio extracts those numbers separately, replays your ledger, and shows you the comparison. Green means proven, not probably fine.

  • Continuous self-checks: totals, allocations and income must agree across the app
  • Warnings speak plain language, show their evidence, and link the one-click fix
  • Wrong listing, missing split, gap in your files — detected and named

What every import earns: the statement's printed totals, replayed against your books.

№ 03

Know how you're really doing

Returns without the flattery

Time-weighted return for the strategy, money-weighted return for your money, and an honest benchmark comparison — the same cash flows, invested in the index instead.

  • Year-by-year profit bridge: market gains, dividends, fees — down to the cent
  • Drawdowns, rolling 12-month returns, monthly heatmap, best & worst days
  • Every figure derived from your actual trades — never estimates
Folio performance page: cumulative return versus benchmark, drawdown chart and monthly return heatmap
№ 04

Watch the income arrive

Folio dividends page: year-by-month dividend heat matrix and per-payer breakdown

Every dividend, mapped

A year-by-month map of everything you've ever been paid, who pays you what, and a projection of the next twelve months at current rates.

  • Dividends detected automatically for your holdings — even between statements
  • Per-company growth streaks and yield on cost
  • Withholding tax tracked separately, the way tax season wants it
№ 05

Every holding, judged fairly

“Was this stock worth it?” — answered

Each holding gets a verdict: your annualised return on it, versus putting the very same cash flows into the index on the very same days. Not vibes — arithmetic.

  • Price history with your buys, sells and dividends marked on it
  • Realised gains per lot, holding periods, cost basis — split-adjusted
  • Company fundamentals, next earnings and ex-dividend dates

The hard stuff, handled

The things that quietly corrupt every spreadsheet — and most trackers.

Stock splits

Recorded from your own statements, cross-checked against market data, never applied twice.

Spin-offs

Guided handling with official terms looked up for you — cost basis carried correctly.

Scrip dividends

Rights issued, sold or converted to shares — the full chain, reconciled.

Broker migrations

Account transfers keep original cost basis and purchase dates across brokers.

Multi-currency

EUR, USD, GBP side by side, converted at the right date's rate — including UK pence quirks.

Multiple brokers

One consolidated view, filterable per broker. Verification always stays per-account.

Duplicates

Re-import anything, any time. Overlapping statements are recognised row by row.

Your corrections

Add or fix any operation by hand — corrections survive re-imports instead of being overwritten.

№ 07

When something looks off, ask

A built-in investigator

Numbers don't match what your broker shows? Ask Folio's assistant. It digs through your actual statements and ledger — read-only — explains what happened, and proposes the exact fix, prefilled. You stay in charge of every change.

Illustrative conversation. The assistant uses your own AI key and never edits your ledger without an explicit click.

Private by architecture, not by promise

Folio is a real desktop app. There is no Folio server, no account, and nothing to breach: your entire financial history lives in one file on your own disk.

Your data stays home

The ledger is a single local file — easy to back up, yours to delete. Market prices are fetched directly from your computer.

AI only when you choose it

Statements from brokers Folio can't read natively are parsed with your own Google Gemini key — sent by you, billed to you (measured: a few cents per year of statements), and shown transparently after every import. Many formats need no AI at all.

Nothing to cancel

Free. No subscription, no telemetry, no lock-in — your history is portable files and one database you can open with any SQLite tool.

In final testing — not released yet

Your portfolio, in your pocket

A read-only companion for iPhone and Android, fed by the same encrypted sync as your backups. It shows what your desktop computed — it never becomes a second bookkeeper.

  • Reads one encrypted file from your own cloud folder — there is still no Folio server
  • Pair once by scanning a code on your desktop; the key stays in your phone's keychain
  • Cached encrypted on the phone: your numbers open instantly, even offline
  • Optional live prices — the request carries ticker symbols, never amounts

Free to install when it ships — the releases page will announce it.

What Folio doesn't do

Deliberate limits — better to know them now than discover them later.

No broker connections

Folio never asks for credentials and holds no keys to your money. It reads files you hand it — nothing more.

No cloud copy

There's no Folio server. Optional backup writes an encrypted file to a folder you choose, under your own cloud account, with a key that stays yours.

No advice

Folio reports what happened, honestly. It won't tell you what to buy — that part stays yours.

No editing from your phone

The bookkeeping happens on your computer. The companion app (in final testing) is deliberately read-only — a window, never a second ledger that could fork your books.

Not always hands-free

A format Folio has never seen may need a one-time review — it shows what it read, asks what's unclear, and only then commits.

No tax filing

It tracks dividends and withholding the way tax season wants them — but filing stays between you and your tax office.

Questions, answered honestly

Is my financial data uploaded anywhere?

No. Your ledger, your statements and all analysis live on your computer. Two things touch the network: market prices are fetched directly from your machine, and — only when you import a format Folio can't read natively — that one statement is sent to Google's Gemini using your own API key. You choose the file, you own the key, and Folio shows you the (tiny) cost after each import.

Which brokers does Folio support?

Interactive Brokers is read natively — activity statements in CSV, HTML and Flex XML — offline and free. Anything else goes through the AI reader, which has been proven on bank broker exports, annual tax reports and PDFs. Once a format is learned and you've confirmed the mapping once, future files of that format import instantly without AI. There is no importer waiting list: if your broker can export a statement, Folio can work on it.

Do I have to connect my broker account?

No — Folio has no broker connections at all, on purpose. You never hand over credentials, so nothing can log in as you, trade as you, or leak what you own. You feed Folio the same statement files your broker already gives you, and that is the entire relationship.

What does the AI part cost me?

You bring your own Google Gemini key (created free at aistudio.google.com). Parsing a full year's statement measures at a few cents; Folio displays the real cost after every import. Interactive Brokers statements and already-learned formats cost nothing.

Is Folio really free? What's the catch?

Free to download and use — no account, no trial, no holding caps, and automatic updates. There is no catch to fund: Folio collects no data, so there is nothing to sell. It was built by an investor for their own portfolio and ships as-is.

What if a statement is wrong, or something doesn't add up?

That's Folio's specialty. Every import is verified against the statement's own printed totals before it lands in your books. If your broker's app shows a different number than Folio, the reconciliation view shows exactly which rows disagree — and the built-in assistant can investigate and propose the fix.

How is Folio different from web trackers like Sharesight or getquin?

Web trackers live in the cloud: your holdings sit on their servers, free tiers are usually capped, and full features typically run €80–300 a year. Folio is a desktop app — free, no account — and it works from statements instead of broker connections. If you ever stop using it, your data is already on your disk.

Can I back up my data, move computers, or see it on my phone?

Your entire history is one database file plus your archived statements — copy that folder and you have a complete backup. Folio can also keep an encrypted backup (AES-256) in a folder your own cloud syncs, and restore it on a new computer in one click. A read-only phone companion that reads the same encrypted snapshot is in final testing.

Where do the screenshots' numbers come from?

A demonstration portfolio — realistic trades, real market prices. Your own numbers stay yours.
